Last summer, I was fortunate enough to be invited to visit a fascinating and unique 15″ gauge railway. The line, inspired by the work of Arthur Heywood at Duffield Bank and Eaton Hall, serves a country house estate which covers some 6000 acres and lies an hour or two to the West of London. If I am coy about giving its name or precise location, it is because my host -an old family friend- is a very private individual. In actual fact, he only agreed to my writing about his railway on condition that I did not reveal his identity or publish any of the photographs taken during my visit. He did, however, consent to my building a scale model of a section of the line, which I hope might capture something of the spirit of this remarkable railway.
